Introduction

The ancient Chinese medicine practice of acupuncture treats various medical diseases and symptoms, including pain. At several “acupoints,” an acupuncturist inserts skinny steel needles into the patient’s skin. The body’s energy, or qi, is rebalanced by the needles, which also cause the body to release natural chemicals to treat the ailment or symptom.

What is acupuncture?

To stimulate particular body locations, acupuncture uses tiny steel needles placed into the skin. The objective is to alleviate a medical ailment or symptom, such as pain. However, the method has its roots in conventional Chinese medicine. Scientific investigations have supported its usefulness for some illnesses.

What conditions does acupuncture treat?

Numerous conditions can be treated with acupuncture. Most frequently, it is used to treat chronic (long-lasting) pain, including:

  • Back pain, neck pain, or muscle pain.
  • Headaches and migraines.
  • Knee pain.
  • Menstrual cramps.
  • Sports injuries.

Other conditions acupuncture may help include:

  • Cancer and cancer treatment side effects.
  • Face pain and another nerve discomfort.
  • Immune system problems.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome.
  • Menopause and hot flashes.
  • Pregnancy discomforts.
  • Repetitive strain disorders and overuse syndrome.

What Are the Health Benefits of Acupuncture?

Depending on the patient, acupuncture may or may not have health advantages. Remember that it can take a few acupuncture treatments before you experience any results.

Although there is little research on the health advantages of acupuncture, certain studies have suggested that treatment can be beneficial for some diseases.

Low Back Pain

A study on non-drug methods for treating lower back pain revealed that acupuncture resulted in less severe pain and improved back functioning immediately following a session. However, it was unclear how beneficial acupuncture treatment was over the long run.

Migraines

Over six months, research on migraines revealed the following:

Compared to individuals who did not receive acupuncture, acupuncture cut the frequency of migraine symptoms in half in 41% of the trial participants.

Acupuncture was found to be roughly as beneficial as medicines for preventing migraines.

Tension Headaches

Having at least six acupuncture treatments may benefit people with head pain or pressure, sometimes known as tension headaches. According to this study, participants who received acupuncture in addition to pain medication experienced fewer headaches on average than those who only received medicine.

Knee Pain

A review of several trials concluded that acupuncture might help people with knee osteoarthritis both temporarily and permanently by enhancing their physical function. The connective tissue in the knee deteriorates as a result of this disorder. This study also discovered that acupuncture could temporarily reduce knee discomfort in osteoarthritis patients.

Does Acupuncture Have Side Effects?

Acupuncture may negatively affect some people, just like any other form of medical care. Among the adverse effects:

  • Pain and bleeding from the needle insertion
  • Nausea
  • Infections
  • Skin rash
  • Allergic reaction
  • Bruising around the area, the needles were placed
  • Dizziness
