Arthritis is the swelling and inflammation of one or more joints. It defines more than 100 conditions that disturb the joints, tissues around joints, and different connective tissues.

Symptoms of Arthritis

The utmost common signs and symptoms of arthritis include the joints. Depending on the form of arthritis, signs and symptoms may include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Redness

Causes of Arthritis

Mainly two types of arthritis — Osteoarthritis also Rheumatoid Arthritis — damage joints differently.

Osteoarthritis

The most common type of arthritis, osteoarthritis, contains wear-and-tear damage to a joint’s cartilage. The complex, slick coating on the ends of bones where the form a joint. Cartilage cushions the ends of the bones and allows nearly frictionless joint motion. Still, enough damage can result in bone grinding directly on the bone, which causes pain and limited movement. This wear and tear might occur over many years, or a joint injury or infection can hasten it.

Osteoarthritis also causes bone changes and weakening of the connective tissues, which attach muscle to bone and grip the joint together. If the cartilage in a joint is harshly damaged, the joint lining can become swollen and inflamed.

Rheumatoid Arthritis

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system outbreaks the coating of the joint capsule, a tough membrane which encloses all the common parts. As a result, this lining (synovial membrane) develops inflamed and swollen. The disease process can ultimately destroy cartilage and bone within the joint.

Risk Factors

  • Family history. Some kinds of arthritis run in families, so you must be more likely to grow arthritis if your parents or siblings can have the disorder.
  • Age. The risk of many kinds of arthritis — including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout — increases with age.
  • Your sex. Women are more expected than men to develop rheumatoid arthritis, while most people with gout, another type of arthritis, are men.
  • Previous joint injury. People who have injured a common, perhaps while playing a sport, are more likely to progress arthritis in that joint eventually.
  • Obesity. Carrying excess pounds stresses joints, mainly your knees, hips and spine. In addition, people with obesity might have a higher risk of developing arthritis.
